LISTENING TO THE BANNED
August 19, 2012 Comments Off
In the week in which three members of Pussy Riot were imprisoned at the end of what was effectively a show trial in Moscow, it is worth flagging up this album of music by artists who have been banned, censored or imprisoned in their homeland. It is produced by the Norwegian artist Deeyah and Freemuse, an organization campaigning for freedom of expression for musicians and composers worldwide.
And here are videos of my favourite artists from the album: the Palestinian Amal Murkus, here singing Ya Oud; Mahsa Vahdat from Iran, performing Silent Song with American blues and soul singer Mighty Sam McClain taken from their album Scent of Reunion; Kamilya Jubra, also from Palestine, with Qawafel; Aziza Brahim, from Western Sahara, with Regreso; and Tiken Jah Fakoly of Côte d’Ivoire singing Promesse Bla Bla.
